Is my E drive OK?

Does drive E play through headphones? If not, there may be something wrong, but if it does, then the second CD drive probably just isn't connected to the sound card. It's customary to have only one of the drives connected, though some sound cards have sufficient inputs to support a second drive.

Windows doesn't need the Dos drivers in Config.sys to run a CD drive. "Rem" at the beginning of a line means that the line will be seen as a remark and not executed. These lines are put in as a reserve; if you ever needed to run the CD drive in a Dos session, you could simply remove the "rem" from these lines, as well as from the line in autoexec.bat that refers to MSCDEX.EXE. If you do load the Dos drivers, Windows will ignore them, so if you don't boot to Dos, you can too.
